Forthcoming: Stories of the people of the water: Texts from Chipaya

Katja Hannß

Synopsis

This collection of twelve Chipaya texts offers an insight into the language, culture, history and storytelling traditions of the Chipaya people of highland Bolivia. It includes a mythical narrative, traditional folk stories as well as autobiographical texts, thereby providing various examples of Chipaya oral narratives. The texts were collected by Alfred Métraux in 1930/31 and originally published by the Journal de la Société des Américanistes in 1935/36. This volume presents a re-edition of Métraux’s texts, with interlinearisation, glossing as well as English and Spanish translations. It also includes a grammar sketch of the Chipaya language. The book thus makes Métraux’s Chipaya texts available to a broader audience, aiming at Andeanists, typologists, historical linguists and researchers working on language documentation.
