Synopsis

This book is a collection of 31 narratives in Hewramî, the majority of which are authentic folktales. The tales represent the last vestiges of a once rich story-telling tradition in the Hewraman region of Iranian Kurdistan. The stories were told by four narrators speaking slightly different dialects of Hewramî Tekht. All the stories have been transcribed, translated, annotated, and analysed.

The volume contains an introduction that provides an overview of the language and speech community, and characterisation of Hewramî tales. The texts are presented in two formats: as parallel column texts (Hewramî/English) and as interlinearised glossed texts, containing detailed linguistic analysis.

Author Biography

Masoud Mohammadirad

Masoud Mohammadirad is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge, working on the British Academy -funded project /Persisting Through Change: A Study of Oral Literature and Cultural Interaction in the Zoroastrian Community/. He received his PhD from Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3 in 2020. His work centres on language documentation, morphology, areal typology, language contact, and spoken corpus linguistics, with particular attention to the Kurdic languages in contact with Semitic (particularly Neo-Aramaic) and Turkic. Additionally, he is actively involved in developing documentary methods and spoken corpora for under-resourced Iranian languages.
